History

 

Tomato comes from Peru. Around the year 700, it was transferred as a weed in Central America and thereafter it began to be cultivated by the Aztecs and Indians . It became popular during the French Revolution , as red was the symbolic color of the rebels. From a point after its consumption was considered to be a proof of faith by the rebels .

The Spanish conquerors brought also red and yellow tomatoes in Seville in 1520 . The Spanish name «pomodoro» means "golden apple" and refers to the original color of tomatoes which was yellow.

The cultivation of tomato in Greece started after 1918 .
